In the early summer of 1940 the small Nordland town Bodø was bombed and large parts of it destroyed. Soon after the German invasion force arrived and fortified the area. Lots of bunkers were built and an airfield was laid with a plank runway. Close to this airfield a concrete building housed the towns fire station which the Germans took control over and a communication bunker was dug down just in front of the building.
The Bodø War Memorial Association was formed in 1988 and has built up a nice collection and is running a war museum which today is found in the above mentioned fire station. This group of enthusiasts is at present restoring the communications bunker in front of the museum, to its former condition, and also restoring a coastal fortification just outside the city, Fort Bremnes.
It is a growing exhibition, but they have made a great job I think. Here you will find lots of different weapons, helmets and other equipment from the opposing forces. Many photos and paintings fill the walls and there are some displays with ground dug relics, which I think was very interesting. The museum is well worth a visit if you are in Bodø and you will find it just across from the National Aviation Museum.
