This week started as every other week this summer. With rain. And low temps. One morning it was a whopping +2 Celsius! But it wasn`t all gloomy and fimbulwintery, we also got one whole day with summer, just enough to tease us.
In the early days of the week I went out to cross a few spots off my list. On the end of a long day searching on the end of last season I had picked up a few interesting signals that I suspected could be dumping pits. I made a note of them in my notebook until now when I found the time to go back there.
I was eager to check what could be hiding underground there so I wasn`t discouraged by the watery clouds hanging just above the roof of my car, and I had wised up from previous trips and was wearing rainclothes.
Before finding back to the first spot I picked up the cap of a german canteen, a medical cream tube and a few buttons.
The potential dumping pit was where I remembered it and the signal was still strong and interesting. I cut open the ground and immediately found a bottom half of a cigarett case made from some aluminum scrap. Its sides had simple decorations, but sadly I could not find the top of it.
I dug to the bottom of the hole, but in it was nothing else except a ton of food tins, a couple of wrenches, a knife and a tent peg. So I could scratch that one out of my notes.
On route to the next spot I got lucky and found a PPSh magazine, and I searched thouroughly the rest of the area around, but to no avail.
The other "hopefully a dumping pit" was also a miss. There was some rubbish buried, thereamongst a few large batteries, barrel bands and broken glass. The only little reward here were a blue dice and two small interestingly shaped medical bottles.
I roamed around a few hours more but I only picked up a nice looking razor.

A knife with intact wooden handle. Red Army PPSh magazine A dice made of glass.
When I had seen the weather report showing summer I told work that I was definitely not coming in, coz that day was going to be spent outside in the gebirgsjäger camp together with the bugs.
Before nine I was on site and turned on the metal detector and went hunting. It was beautiful. Mist rose from the ground between the birches, and rays from the sun peeking out from behind the mountain sliced through it.
I had a specific area I wanted to scan properly for alu and zink signals. In this corner of the camp several ID tags had surfaced during summer. With the terrain and the size of it in mind I was and am still sure there is a good chance for more tags to be found.
When I had dug up food tins, zink scrap and the odd rifle casing for maybe two hours, luck struck. Erkennungsmarke! It was the same type of tag and unit I found one and half of here previously. 4./ Gb.Jg.R. 139.
With the tag safely placed in my pocket I continued and soon had dug up three mule shoes and an axe hoping the strong iron signals would be Lugers.
Finding a german id tag. 4./Gb.Jg.R.139
An hour went by and I was almost back where I had placed the backpack to grab me some lunch when the detector gave me a clear and strong alu signal.
Full of wishes and hopes I turned over the piece of ground and could feel a disc between my fingers. I tore it loose and it was another erkennungsmarke!! Again from a gebirgsjäger unit. 9./G.J.ERS.RGT. 138 this time. I couldn`t believe my own eyes.

After a good lunch and rest in the sun I took a long stroll around the camp. Checking good signals along the way.
I found two göffels. One German made of aluminum, and a Finnish one made from steel, but it had preserved well.
Together with a rotted shoe, some cloth, and a food tin was a German uniform button made of plastic, which is kinda unusual. Other than mostly junk I dug up from a garbage covered slope a bottom of a 75mm brass casing.
I had almost looped back to the base when the Relic Gods threw a little something at me again. It was a mix of strong signals and turned out to be a small stash of garbage-treasures. A horseshoe tool, two horseshoes, a bunch of gaming pieces and a brass tag ca 8 cm long, with holes in each side.
I thought it would be a luggage tag, but it is rather a name tag. It was numbered 221 and the name punched into it read Viktoria.
There was still a signal left uncovered on the side of the small dump and from there I pulled out a close combat knife. Some wood was still left on one side of its handle.
Nametag maybe for a horse. 221 Viktoria. Close combat knife. Puma
It was the last find worth mentioning this day. I swung the detector for at least another hour before I shut her down for the day. It had become late and I had no more water or food left, and with the three-four great finds it wasn`t difficult to joyfully stroll back to the car to enjoy the rest of the sunny day at home together with the GirlfriendWife and the cat, Mr.Noise.
Thanks for reading. Stay muddy :)
