wehrmacht map tools

In a forest where a gebirgsjäger artillery unit once lived I have searched and metal detected for a few seasons, and found several interesting map tools and some shooting tables for their guns. Most of these early plastic items were found on the edge of burn pits, so it was very lucky they didn`t all melt in the flames from the big trash burning in the summer of 1945.

The map tools shown below can be used for different types of maps as they have several scales engraved on them.

This map tool in aluminum is very interesting I think, since it has time estimates for troop movements printed on it.

Shooting Tables.

In a large dumping pit in the artillery camp I found some shooting tables I had never seen before. Thin sheets of some kind of plastic. Painted white and printed with different grids and tables and seems to have been for the s.F.H. 18 field guns.

In the same pit I also found a plastic Target square table.

Clock / Compass Disc :

Handpainted compass/clock target location device
The metal disc measures 30 cm across and is handpainted with compass directions and as a clock face with 12 to the North and 6 to the South. I bet it was used as some kind of targeting device.

Map Table:

I found this Wehrmacht map table in a barn a few years ago. It was missing one or two screws, a ruler and the carrying straps, but a very curious find. According to the owner of the barn, the farm had been used by a Gebirgsjäger Stab.

The legs are foldable and have spikes for a good grip in the field. The text warns that it has magnetic parts which might affect any compass placed ontop it.
