Narvik was the city where Hitler saw his first defeat during WWII. After some fierce
battles at sea and on land, the Allied forces had pushed the German troops
almost into Sweden, when the decision came to pull back the troops. This of
course led to the Germans re-capturing Narvik and gaining control over this area
and Norway.
Today there isn't much to see from this era, unless you know where to
look! The mountains around the city are speckled with remnants from the battles, and the
fjord and harbour can offer a lot of excitement for divers. Downtown you can
find the Narvik Museum which was established in 1964, and just outside the
entrance to this you can have a closer look at a Hotchkiss tank the French
forces left behind. It's a rather large collection on display here, therefore a
military geek can easily spend many hours walking through it all.
