The day before Winter

For a couple of days I had been working on cleaning out a pit that turned into a ditch the more I dug.  I had found one of the larger dumping pits in the Org. Todt area and I just kept dragging scrap metal, bottles, porcelain and tools out of the ground and it seemed to be in deep layers as well, deeper than most of the holes I had opened here this autumn.
This morning it was a few degrees below zero so the top centimeters of the soil was frozen but as the sun rose it tawed quickly and I kept digging through the day. Only smaller stuff came out of it but on the afternoon when it started to become dark I checked my ditch with the metal detector and there was still deep signals. I dug some more and found bigger metal that looked to be from a vehicle and some engine parts, but I had to close up for the evening and head home.
Next morning I got up early and was eager to do some more digging but as I looked out the window my heart sank, everything was covered in snow and it kept falling thick, the temperature kept falling towards the evening too. Winter had come and shovelling snow was the only digging to look forward to...
