Rainy Day

It was raining all night but when I finally got myself out of bed it had stopped and it looked like it would clear up, so I brewed some coffee and prepared for a day in the forest.
I drove to the capitulation site and had a plan to dig out and check under at least two of the wire coils I ve found earlier. I never dug them out before as they are quite large and very stuck but I needed to know if there could be dumping pits under them. I quickly found my way to the first of them and started digging around it, but when I got it loose I found nothing under it so I strolled off to the next one. On the way I dug every signal the Fisher gave, but it seemed I was walking on a belt of nails and wire bits.
As I was digging wire coil number two it began raining, but I was warm and in treasure hunter mode so I didn`t mind getting soaked. I found nothing under this coil either so I continued picking up single signals around the forest.
The rain grew in intensity so I was happy I had put on the new raincover for the Fisher, but it began getting real tiresome walking around in this "hell weather" so I withdrew back to the car.
I didn`t find much today, the only good find was the clasp from a soldiers belt, sadly the buckle was nowhere to find .
Back home it was great getting into dry clothes and make a fire in the stove and the rest of the day will be spent cleaning some of the finds made earlier this summer.

losantine bottles. Bakelite bottle containing liquid for protecting the skin against gas, german ww2
This weekend there was no digging. My brothers visited me and our parents so I had a nice relaxing weekend together with them, but today I was back in the forest. I had to finish the pit I began digging on Thursday so I took direction towards it, swinging the metal detector in front of me. I dug a few signals and found some k98 ammo and some scrap metal and modern rubbish before I noticed a little dump in the forest floor. The Fisher gave of a nice mixed signal so I dug it open. It was a small dumping pit with a few nice items. I pulled out a few losantine bottles, a gas mask canister, a leather pouch with goggles inside, it was a alu canteen there, some bottles and a few other bits.

When I had filled back the hole I walked a bit further and found the hole from thursdays digging. I widened all the sides until there was no more metal and then I began digging to find the bottom of it. It didn`t take too long as I had dug most of it before the weekend, but some items came out from the ground. I found a small porcelain jar, dug out the lid for it on thursday so it is nice to have it complete. Then I found another canteen, a piece of a signal flare, a leather scabbard for a knife, could be for a Finnish Pukko knife, and a leather pouch for Erkennungsmärke, but no tag. When it was empty I filled it back and continued to search for more signals.

Continuing the search I had a good signal instantly, I had to use the pinpointer to locate it and it was a German coin. A 10 Reichspfennig I think, but will know for sure when I`ve cleaned it.
The next signal the Fisher gave off was again a strong mixed signal so I took off my backpack and opened up another dumping pit. It was a good layer of rocks on top and the ground was also rock hard here so it was difficult to dig at first, but when I got that top layer away it was sandy and easy to dig. It proved to be quite a big pit this, I dug it for a few hours and removed a lot of rubbish, but inbetween a few nicer items got touched by a human hand again after  70 years. It was mostly leather bits that had survived in this pit, I found two k98 ammo pouches, one was in a sad state, but the other one was quite nice and surprisingly it had a bayonet frog stuck on the back. The other leather bit was a fieldshovel belt hanger. I also found some flares, a few k98 casings, a rifle cleaning kit, a losantin tablet box and a rosodont box. On the bottom of the hole was a nice beer bottle, well marked.
It had been a good day,the bag was filled with relics and it was getting dark so it was time to leave back home.

Stay happy,,and muddy:)

New PinPointer

Since I was digging in Priekule this spring and used my pinpointer under water it didn`t work right so a few days ago I ordered a new one, which I can use under water. It came with the mail this morning so I picked it up at the post office and went straight to the forest.
The first 11 signals I had today was all k98 rounds spread across a few meters, and the next 4 or 5 signals I dug was uniform buttons. Digging all these I got to test the pinpointer a bit and I really like it. It has different settings for sensitivity and sound, but I didn`t try any of them today,I just used it on the standard setting. I like that it is orange, it makes it so much easier to not loose it.
The next few signals I dug was also a little bit "symetric", first signal was a fire place with several german batteries. Then I found a small dumping pit and in there was also two batteries, but I never seen ones like these before, flat and square and with russian markings and I hear water in them when I shake them.

After I had something to eat I continued searching and suddenly I had a nice clean signal. It was a small signal but the pinpointer found the metal instantly. It was a small german coin, 5 Reichspfenning, a bit worn but in nice condition really. Only a few meters away I got a large mixed signal, a dumping pit. It seemed to be a small one but still, I love dumping pits, anything can come out from it. Unfortunately I wasn`t lucky with this one, it was only broken stuff except a few bottles.

A couple of hours went by searching, trying to dig every signal given by the Fisher F5 but between the nails, food tins and wires was only a rifle cleaning kit and a karbid lamp, also quite rusted. Again there was a strong mixed signal and this time it was a more interesting dumping pit. The top of it was a thick layer of broken bottles but I got it removed carefully. The first metal I got dug out was three bits of a stove pipe and underneath those was 6 or 7 bottles. I kept pulling out food tins and rubbish and the hole got deeper and wider. I started cleaning up the sides of it and found two bakelite Rosodont toothpowder boxes and some suspenders made from rubber. I then began to move soil and try to find the bottom of the pit. I kept working on it until it began getting darker and the stomach was howling. I had pulled out a lot of bottles and rubbish metal but the pit seems to be deep and I will just have to continue it one of the next days.
Until then,have a great weekend:)

The Cobblers Pit

I have spent the last two days digging, it feels a lot better than having spent the weekend at the bar.
Yesterday I continued digging the hole with the wheel, I cleared half of it, but now im stuck. Not sure if I will be able to get the wheel out from there. Laying across it is 2 or 3 corrugated sheets which are quite long and wide, and atop them is 1,5m x 1,5m x 2m sand, roots and forest floor and one or two more of the triangular ovens is in there as well. Will make another attempt tomorrow or one of the next days, and if I cant get it I ll ask the landowner if we can go in there with a mini-digger:)
I didnt find much stuff either, tons of rusted food tins and one triangular barrack stove was dug out, but between two of the spokes in the wheel I did find a thermometer in near perfect condition, marked "Wehrmacht",and walking back to the car I found another unissued EKM.

This morning I decided to search another forest, a site which held a Heer camp, and was also used as a capitulation site for troops retreating from the Murmansk front passing through here. This place is strewn with signals and small dumping pits and is really exciting to search. Back in the oldendays it was a farm on the site and thee first signal I dug today gave me a little trip back there. A Norwegian coin, 1 Skilling Species , from 1820.
It didn`t take long before I had found a small dumping pit to dig, close to the camps kitchen so I hoped to find some porcelain cups or dishes or nice cutlery. The relic fairies had planned it otherwise, or maybe the cobbler had his workshop next to the kitchen. All I found was a few bottles and lots of leather bits and a little mountain of boot heel irons.
I then decided to stroll around to pick up single signals, but I didn`t find much of interest really, I didn`t  walk by any dumping pits either before it started raining heavily forcing me to retreat. I am for sure searching this site some more before the winter comes..

Buttons & Trash

german uniform button ww2
Woke up to a perfect digging weather late this morning. I quickly decided to spend the day in the forest and made some lunch to bring after having breakfast. I wanted to try find the lid for the bunker stove top I found yesterday so I turned on the Fisher and strolled towards the little clearing in the forest. On my way there I dug two small dumping pits. They were full of wires and rusted trash, and a few bunker stove parts. I also dug out a bunch of horseshoes and some other horse related items. A nice Bit,or Bridle well preserved and a interesting tag. It looks like a POW ID tag,but it has "Valatta" stamped on it, so I wonder if it can be a name tag for a horse or prehaps a dog??

I walked to the clearing and searched around for about an hour but found only scrap metal and in one spot I found 15 German uniform buttons, which was a nice find I think.
Now I was close to the dumping pit I closed up mid november last year and decided it was time to continue digging that. I spent the next few hours opening it up again, and since its been raining a lot lately the sand was heavy to lift out of the hole. After removing all the rust I already had dug out once before I needed a rest. The sand I had removed from the hole looked a bit like a comfy half-sofa so I slumped down on it had something to eat and then took a nap. It was very comfortable and I slept for about half an hour before something crawled up my nose and into my brain and woke me up,,god I hope it wasn`t a spider.
I continued to dig and I  soon found the wooden wagon wheel I had started clearing last november. It is rather deep down and will take forever to dig out, but I intend to get it out. I cleared away all the soil and rust from between the spokes and widened the hole a bit. But by now it was getting late and I was becoming seriously hungry again so I decided to leave the rest for tomorrow.

Another "Dog-Tag" Day

german id tag
Latley it has been raining on and off but in the dry spells I ve been quick to get out to the forest. Still searching the new permission and I made a stroll around on the capitulation site as well.
On the first place I am digging out what looks like a large dumping ditch, it is heavy clay and lots of wires makes it hard to dig there. I haven`t found anything else than some bottles and a few tools and unknown parts between smashed and rotted away food tins.
I ve been searching "single signals" around there as well, but still nothing interesting yet apart from a few detonators, which I dug down deep. Well, one of those signals was interesting,at least at first, it was a large strong iron signal. When I opened up the soil I understood it was a large item and as I found two corners I thought it could be a crate or a box of some sort. It took some digging before I realised it was an oven of the type often used in barracks, quite large and for sure heavy to dig out.

I had a bit more luck on the capitulation site. I found a nice little dumping pit after searching a while. I could see a small ditch filled with old branches. The Fisher gave up some mixed signals so I started digging. Charcoal and broken glass and some food tins came out of the ground first, and then some large springs, probably from a matress or a chair. I spent an hour on it and had in the end a little collection of bottles and jars and a small mountain of porcelain balls from the m24 grenades, some leather belts and harness and a razor.

I followed the ditch, digging every signal. a few meters was empty or had only wire and barbed wire but soon I found another cluster of relics. It wasn`t so much metal time had treated very well, but it was a few cool finds in the pit. A shovel,or Klappspaten as the Germans would call it, and a Puma close combat knife was worth rescuing from further decay. And ofcourse more bottles,,I could start a brewery soon I think.

Later I walked into a small clearing in the forest and the Fisher screamed out good signals everywhere. I just had to put my backpack somewhere and start checking signals. -Wow, first one was a Erkennungsmärke,,and next to it another one! I got out the pin pointer and it showed me where the goods was. In less than a minute I had four of them. They had no stamps so they had never been issued.
I spent a few hours checking the place and in the end I had found 20 whole Erkennungsmärken, two halfs and one quarter piece, all looked to be unissued. In the search I also found the top of a bunker oven, but not the lid, so I need to go back and search more here. Tomorrow :)

9mm german ammo ww2
The last weeks there have been no digging, but before the weekend I finally got back out there. Recently I had a chat with a farmer and he agreed to let me search on his land. I was eager to get started and began by walking around the forest just making a mental map of what signals are where and then I decided on a small groove in the forest floor and opened it up as the detector showed a mix of signals. After removing some parts from a horsedrawn wagon, a fair bit of barbed wire and barrell bands I found a bunch of 9mm ammo with still some remains of the cardboard box around them. There were also some leather parts, a wrench, some hooks and clasps from horse harness and a rusted Esbit stove.

After checking if there was anything else than barbed wire and trash there I dug down the ammo and filled back the hole. I wandered towards the next little pit and dug a few signals on the way over. I found a spork and the next two signals a few meters apart was of the dangerous kind, two detonators Brennzunder 24, which I dug down deep again.

The next pit I spent digging for at least an hour, it was also full of wires, barrell bands and broken bottles. A few items was more interesting, a unfinished trench art cigarett case, a uniform button, a k98 training round with a wooden bullet and a shaving brush made of silver or neusilber probably more likely.

In a ditch I saw the top edge of a 200l barrell and decided to check it out. It was covered with a pile of barbed wire and fence wire which was completely overgrown with grass and small bushes, it was a pain to move it enough to make it possible to dig near the barrell. The soil was grey clay and was full of rust and broken bottles. A bit more than half meter down I found a nice ZZ42 igniter and a small piece of aluminium with a name engraved. Then the rain started pouring down so I decided to retreat back to a more dry environment and leave the rest of the pit until monday.
