The Tool Pit

Three days in a row with sun now, almost unbelivable! After breakfast and coffee I drove to where I found the panzerfaust tube some days ago. I spent an hour digging signals which all was nails, fence wires, spent casings and other garbage. After ruling out that spot for future trips here I started moving towards a section I haven`t really searched much in yet. I had some good signals here and there with less interesting objects and no dumping pits. The ants and mosquitoes were swarming and with no finds I started getting bored and thought about going home to play World of Tanks and have dinner. I took directions towards the car and kept sweeping the detector on the ground in front of me and suddenly there was a more interesting beep from it.

The signal was deep , large and showed lots of different metals. I threw the bag and detector away and dug a nice big square out of the ground. A piece of a chain for some horse equipment, but it was stuck. Either it was stuck to a root or there was more stuff below. I cleared away the sand and more items showed up. There was a german boot and a horseshoe. I got them loose but the chain was still stuck. I dug all the way around it and more and more stuff came loose. Soon I felt that I could move the chain and I started pulling It was real heavy and after a while I had pulled out meters of chains in different lengths and sizes. They all had rings and hooks so it was obvious it was all for horses and wagons.

With the chains out of the way it was easier to dig and it was loads of stuff here. I dug carefully as I wouldn`t risk damaging anything. Between several horseshoes I felt the corner of a metal box, and it felt pretty solid. When I got it loose I felt it was heavy  and something inside it rattled. I knocked of some dirt and it looked like the box was in a good condition. I put it aside and continued digging. Out came a few Karbide boxes in bakelite, of which only one was complete, the others was broken. I pulled out more horseshoes, four bundled together. And then I saw another box in the hole!! This one also looked to be in one piece and was also filled with something!! Next to it was a bunch of small files, pliers, hammers, a large screwdriver with the wooden handle intact and I think eight horseshoe wrenches and some leather parts for horse equipment. When I had reached the bottom and all the sides had been checked and then checked again I stretched my back and started sorting the finds. The pit quickly filled up again but there was a sizeable haul for me to drag back to the car. I had to make two trips to the car and will have enough stuff to clean from rust when rainy days come :)

Keep Digging :)

I am going to try open the boxes without damaging them. I am eager to figure out whats inside them, but I suspect it to be horeshoe cleats as I found a few looses ones in the dumping pit..

I got both of the boxes opened without damaging them, and as I had thought they contained ice cleats for horseshoes. A pocket knife with bakelite grips was also in there.
